Wirral Deen Centre is a mosque and community centre open to everyone based in the Birkenhead & Tranmere ward, which falls within the top 4% of most deprived areas in England. Having previously not run any projects relating to physical activity, the charity approached MSP for some funding through the Together Fund in order to encourage people from predominantly BAME backgrounds to increase their physical activity levels during the Covid19 pandemic. Since 1999, we have distributed in excess of £44 million to charities and community groups in Merseyside. Our knowledge of the sector allows us to find and reach charities in our community, including lesser-known charities operating at a grassroots level; ensuring charitable awards create lasting change. We work as part of a national network of 46 UK Community Foundations that undertake a strategic and robust grant making service, which contributes to achieving maximum impact in local communities.
